NJ Transit put pedestrians and passengers in danger by keeping bus drivers on the job with 50 incidents and on cocaine why operating the bus. This driver should have been fired with the first accident. The bus driver did not go to jail when he struck a man.


NEWARK — A man who suffered brain injuries after being struck by an NJ Transit bus has settled a lawsuit for more than $12 million.

The accident in 2016 occurred as Jason Gillespie walked in a crosswalk in Summit and left him unable to work or drive and with permanent neurological damage.

Gillespie's attorneys said driver Ronald Lewis had been involved in more than 50 accidents on the job

Lewis tested positive for cocaine, but Gillespie attorney David Mazie contended that didn't prove he was impaired.

NJ Transit had sought to show Lewis was under the influence at the time of the crash, which would have allowed the agency to avoid liability.

An NJ Transit spokeswoman didn't comment Tuesday.

The settlement was initially reported by the New Jersey Law Journal.

Stephen B. Mangold, 54, of Bardonia, New York was struck and fatally injured at approximately 11:50 a.m. near 11th Avenue and Main Street in Neptune, a New Jersey Transit official told Patch. The train departed Bay Head at 11:21 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Long Branch at 12 p.m., the spokesman said. There were approximately 60 people on board the train at the time of the incident.
